Young adults learn about healthy relationships

On Feb. 13, students at the Naval Submarine Base (SUBASE) Youth Center gathered over pizza and soda to learn about healthy relationships. Educators from Safe Futures facilitated an hour-long program for the teens to discuss relationship dynamics, equality within relationships, boundaries, friendships and healthy masculinity. The program enabled these young adults to explore topics pertaining to teen dating violence, as February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM). Teen dating violence is more common than many people think. According to the CDC, one in three teens in the U.S. will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse by a dating partner before adulthood. The program, which was sponsored by the Fleet and Family Support Center, aimed to bring attention to some of the red-flag behaviors of an unhealthy relationship dynamic and to learn ways to nurture loving and healthy relationships.
