GROTON, Conn. – Naval Submarine Base (SUBASE) New London hosted its annual Luau on the Lake event, July 13.

Organized by SUBASE New London Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) department, the yearly event took place at North Lake and included food, drinks, bounce houses and a wide variety of activities for SUBASE New London families and their children.

Melissa Forrester, MWR special events coordinator, said approximately 275 guests enjoyed the evening.

“The event was a complete success, the weather cooperated, and people really enjoyed the lake being open until 7:30 p.m.,” said Forrester. “The live Luau show was a lot of fun. The event concluded with the movie ‘The Lion King’ shown on the beach of North Lake.”

Staff served Pacific-style foods such as fried rice, sweet and sour chicken and pulled pork sliders and beverages ranging from water and pop to beer for the adults. Children at the event enjoyed jumping in a large bounce house and participating in arts and crafts. Guests also had the opportunity to see dancers perform a traditional New Zealand Maori war dance.

SUBASE New London MWR regularly hosts events like the luau and provides programs to active duty, reserve, retired personnel and their families, contributing to the mental, physical, and emotional readiness and wellbeing of Sailors. For more information about MWR activities, call (860) 694-2298.
