CROMWELL, Conn. - Despite mother nature’s rain showers, 26 new mothers and soon-to-be mothers from Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE) and its tenant commands were celebrated at group baby shower hosted by Professional Golf Association (PGA) Travelers Championship at the Tournament Players Club (TPC) River Highland on June 28.
The non-profit organization Operation Shower, along with the PGA’s Birdies for the Brave, and Connecticare coordinated the “Under the Sea” themed event that brought celebrities, professional golfers, and business, community, and military leaders together to honor and congratulate the military moms.
"We are celebrating you today for being the why. Why are they willing to serve, why are they willing to sacrifice, so thank you for being the why," said Tournament Director Nathan Grube.
Operation Shower has been held for more than 10 years, and the moms at Tuesday's shower said it was an honor to be part of it and were showered with multiple gifts including highchairs, crib bedding, and strollers.
New mom Trisha Jarrett, whose husband is attached to USS San Juan (SSN 751) was appreciative of the gifts for her two-week-old daughter Reagan. "It's so exciting to have something new for her. She's the second girl, so she gets a lot of hand-me-downs so it's cute to have some of her own things just for her.”
“I enjoyed listening to the speakers about why they put these types of events together,” said Ashlyn Lopez whose husband is assigned to Historic Ship Nautilus. They are expecting their baby girl in early September. “It was wonderful to meet all the other ladies there who are all going through the same experience of being pregnant while their husbands are in the military.”
Along with the baby shower, 10 Sailors from Naval Submarine School and Submarine Learning Center also attended as honorary caddies in the Travelers Pro-Am tournament.
“It was an awesome experience. I was able to caddy for Brooks Koepka, one of my favorites, and had a good chat with him and his Caddy Ricky Elliot,” said Senior Chief Chris Helms, from Naval Submarine School. “Birdies for the Brave did a good job of taking care of us.”
In response to the warm welcome the Travelers Championship Tournament presented to the Navy New London Sailors and families, SUBASE hosted a tour for professional golfer, Brandt Snedeker and his family. The Snedeker’s toured USS North Dakota (SSN 784) and participated in a meet and greet with patrons at SUBASE’s Goose Run Golf Course.
