MYSTIC, Conn. - Summer programs at the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center (DPNC) will continue through Aug. 31. These programs are for all ages to enjoy time in nature, whether as a family or individually. DPNC offers hikes, cooking, gardening, cooking programs and more. DPNC also participates in Blue Star Museums, so general admission to the Nature Center's natural history exhibits are free to military personnel and their families. Dig Into Nature - Grasshoppers

Join us for our free monthly drop off program for ages 5-12 to learn more about our local animals, plants, and habitats, Aug. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon. Each class includes live animals, activities and lots of time outside. This month’s topic is Grasshoppers! Plan on spending time out in the meadow, wear sneakers and bring a water bottle. Meets at DPNC. Pre-registration is required.

Stars and Stories: Perseid Meteor Shower

Join us for stories and stars as we hear about constellations and look for meteors, Aug. 10 from 8 to 10 p.m. Bring a chair or blanket to relax in and look to the night sky. This program is suited for families. Meets at Coogan Farm. Cost for members is $4.25, $5 for non-members.

Gungywamp Hike in Groton

Gungywamp is an archaeological site of distinct natural and cultural interest. It has rocky ridges, glacial erratics and swamps along with enigmatic stone shelter and structures whose use and origin are open to interpretations. Walk with us through the woods and absorb the mysteries of Gungywamp, Aug. 11 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. This moderate program is suited for adults and families comfortable walking two miles over uneven terrain. Pre-registration is required. Meets at Shepherd of the Sea Chapel parking area on Gungywamp Road in Groton. Cost for members is $12.75, $15 for non-members.

Veggie Basics for everyone

You don’t need to be a full-time vegetarian to help the planet. Eating meatless once a week can have a positive impact on the planet and your own health. Each month, we will demonstrate how to make a favorite recipe and help you eat good food with a positive impact. This program is suited for adults. Meets in the Lattner Kitchen at Coogan Farm, Aug. 13 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Cost is $17 per class for members, $20 per class for non-members.

Full Sturgeon Moon Hike at Napatree

Join DPNC and Watch Hill Conservancy naturalists as we watch the moon rise at Napatree and keep our eyes peeled for nocturnal wildlife, Aug. 14 from 7:45 to 9 p.m. This free program is suited for adults and older interested children.

Nature Night Out for parents

Everyone deserves a night out! Have an evening out while your kids, ages 5-12, spend the evening at the Nature Center, Aug. 17 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Each month we’ll explore a new theme through games, activities, meeting live animals and a night hike. We’ll have pizza for dinner and round out the evening with s’mores around the campfire. Please be dressed for the weather and bring a flashlight! Meets at DPNC. Cost for members is $25.50 per child per class, $30 per child per class for non-members. Additional siblings: Members are $12.75, non-members, $15.
