MYSTIC, Conn. – The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center (DPNC) announces programs and activities for the month of October 2019. For more information, or to register, call (860) 536-1216.
In this class, Oct. 5 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., children ages 3 to 5 with special needs, and a caregiver will make nature discoveries and explore seasonal topics through activities, live animals, crafts and time outside. In addition to learning about nature, this class will provide plenty of social time for children and caregivers. This program is free with support from the EK Bunting Fund for Nature and the Arts.
Warblers Walk at Coogan Farm
Join us for a guided walk of the trails at Coogan Farm, Oct. 5 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. We will be on the lookout for warblers, vireos and other small song birds as they prepare to head south. Participants are encouraged to bring their own binoculars and water. This program will be led by Laura Craver-Rogers and Kevin Rogers. This program is suited for adults and older interested children. Meets at Coogan Farm outside the Avery Welcome Center. Cost for this activity is $12.75 for members and $15 for non-members.
Have your children, ages 6 to 12, join us for fun in our teaching kitchen exploring healthy cooking options, Oct. 5 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Using fresh ingredients each class we’ll cook up something wonderful. For this program we will be making veggie pizza. Meets in the Lattner Kitchen at Coogan Farm. Must register at least 48 hours in advance of program to ensure supplies. Cost is $17 for members and $20 for non-members.
Gungywamp is an archaeological site of distinct natural and cultural interest. It has rocky ridges, glacial erratics and swamps along with enigmatic stone shelter and structures whose use and origin are open to interpretation. Walk with us through the woods and absorb the mysteries of Gungywamp. This program, Oct. 6 from 1 to 3:30 p.m., is suited for adults and families comfortable walking two miles over uneven terrain. Pre-registration is required. Meets at Shepherd of the Sea Chapel parking area on Gungywamp Road in Groton. Cost for members is $12.75, $15 for non-members.
Peace Sanctuary Hike
End the work week with a relaxing walk at the Peace Sanctuary, Oct. 11 from 5 to 6 p.m. We’ll stroll the hillside enjoying the fall evening and admiring the beautiful view of the Mystic River. Meet at the bottom of the Peace Sanctuary driveway at 233 River Road in Mystic. This program is suited for adults and older interested children. This program is free.
Dig Into Nature - Hawks
Join us for our free monthly drop off program for children, ages 5 to 12, to learn more about our local animals, plants, and habitats! Each class includes live animals, activities and lots of time outside. This month’s topic is Hawks and will take place Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to noon. Plan on heading out to the meadow, so wear sneakers and bring a water bottle! Meets at DPNC. Pre-registration is required for this free activity.
Invasive Plant Management
Join us to learn how to recognize and eliminate invasive plants in your own yard, Oct. 12 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. We will walk around Coogan Farm to cover the most common problematic invasive plants at this site and what is being done to manage them to protect biodiversity and restore habitat for wildlife! A few of the invasive species we will identify in the field and discuss include mugwort, black swallow-wort, porcelainberry, multiflora rose, Japanese barberry, Japanese knotweed, Oriental bittersweet and autumn olive. We will also see how to fight plants with plants, using native plantings to help to prevent invasive regrowth and re-infestation. This free program is suited for adults. Meets at Coogan Farm.
Full Harvest Moon Hike
Celebrate the full harvest moon during a hike at Coogan Farm, Oct. 13 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Please note full moon hikes happen even on overcast nights, and are suitable for adults and older, interested children. Heavy rain cancels this free event. Meet at Coogan Farm.
Funky Fungus Vacation Day Program
Looking for something fun for your children, ages 5 to 12, to do while they are off from school? Have them join us for either a full or half day of nature fun, Oct. 14. We will spend the day exploring habitats, meeting animals and playing games around the Nature Center. Have children bring a snack, water bottle, lunch and dress for the weather. Meets at DPNC. Please note different pricing for half day or full day program.
