All proceeds help children, with a financial need, to be able to participate in an organized sports program. This fund was established in 2007 in memory of Cory "Big Red" Milton, a young man who had a big heart, loved to play sports and enjoyed motorcycles. Unfortunately, on Aug. 1, 2007, he was taken from us in a fatal car accident. He was such a gentle giant, at 6’3" tall and weighed over 300 pounds with bright red hair. He enjoyed playing football, baseball, basketball, hockey, golf and threw the shot put for track. He wasn’t the best athlete but just loved being part of the team. Therefore, in his memory we created The Big Red Memorial Fund.
We work with area coaches of all youth sports to provide financial assistance for registration or equipment for children who would not otherwise be able to participate in a sports program. Since 2007, we have been able to provide registration fees and/or gift cards for equipment for over 1,000 children in New London County to participate in several sports programs - football, baseball, softball, basketball, swimming, fencing, track, cheerleading, soccer and lacrosse. In addition, the fund has helped numerous sports programs in the area.
Many of the individuals we have helped come from a family of more than one child, single parent, a family of only one income, a recently lost job or there has been a critical illness in the family. Therefore, when these parents struggle to pay for rent and groceries, they cannot pay for extras like registration fees for a sport.
You don’t need a motorcycle to participate. The Big Red Memorial Fund is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, all donations are tax deductible.
